The Maldives

5 of the most adventurous activities in the Maldives

Author: Naomi Dunbar

The Maldives is renowned for being a sublime tropical paradise like no other. The country, which is made up of a scattering of over one thousand islands, offers travellers a relaxing haven of pristine white sands, rich blue skies and water as clear as crystal. However, the Maldives isn’t just for those of us who are well-off and enjoy sitting around and soaking up the sun. If you look past the cocktails and five-star luxury villas, you’ll find an abundance of activities to keep even the most adventurous travellers occupied, and a good selection of guesthouses on local islands which makes staying there more affordable.

So, with the above in mind, we teamed up with specialist tour company Secret Paradise Maldives to bring you the top five adventurous activities to do in the Maldives.

1. Swimming with whale sharks

At an adult size of up to 12m long, whale sharks are the largest known fish species in the entire world, and one of the best places to swim with these magnificent beasts is in the Maldives. Though they may be daunting in size, these majestic giants are harmless to humans, so you can count on only the plankton being lunch!

2. Windsurfing

Windsurfing is a thrilling way to pick up the pace and get the adrenaline pumping through your veins on a trip to the Maldives. Using the power of the wind to propel you, this activity will put your balance and agility to the test, and is a great way of cooling down when the afternoon’s temperatures get a bit too hot.

3. Reef snorkelling

You’ll be blown away by the sheer splendour of the coral reef’s technicolor scenery in the Maldives. Buzzing with an array of marine life, you’ll see colours more vibrant than you’ve ever seen before. With so much to see, you’ll lose yourself in the mesmerising underwater life for hours and hours.

4. Sea safari

Take to the seas by boat to explore more of what lies beneath the water’s surface in the Maldives. You’ll be pretty unlucky if you don’t spot at least one school of excitable dolphins on your trip, swimming along with the boat and showing their best back flip skills off to their audience. You may also be lucky enough to encounter the magnificent moment a whale breaches for air.

5. Island hopping

Island hopping is fantastic way to add a bit of variety to your trip in the Maldives, and you can spend a day (or a few) exploring gorgeous uninhabited islands all varying in size and beauty. Many tours also offer you the chance to enjoy a deliciously traditional BBQ dinner upon the shore, while watching a fiery sunset meet the ocean as it fades to night.
