For £120 you get an awful lot of jacket for not a lot of money with Result’s Kelvin Jacket, writes Paul Jennison. It’s full of features and warm and practical, although very heavy. It’s quite low key, so it won’t turn heads in the après ski fashion stakes, nor will it tell everyone you’re a hardcore skier if you wear it for walking the dog across the local park. But what it does do is keep you warm and dry with all the functionality of something that could cost three times as much.

The outer shell has a wind- and waterproof membrane called Guy-Tex, laminated to the 320-denier Taslon fabric which is strong and durable while remaining breathable. To add to the weatherproofing the outer face is treated with Dupont Teflon PU coating that will repel rain and dirt. Insulation is provided by 3M Thinsulate that will keep you warm, although it is a little bulkier than others in this test. To finish the deal the inner lining is called PolarTherm Techmesh, which provides yet more insulation but with temperature and moisture regulation that will help keep you dry, warm and comfortable. If you need more temperature control there are two mesh-backed pit vents that will allow cool air in.

The Kelvin has a generous removable hood that will accommodate a ski helmet. It can be adjusted by glove-friendly toggles to get the fit just right. The collar behind the hood is reasonably high with a soft fleece lining.

The jacket is longer than others in this test and the cut is large enough to allow for ample layering beneath. The sleeves are articulated with an inset panel at the elbow to give unrestricted arm movement. The cuffs are big enough to fit over large gloves and do up with Velcro to close down any gaps. There is a short inner wrist gaiter but it isn’t long enough to extend over the hand and doesn’t feature the popular thumb loops. The jacket has a detachable powder skirt with an elasticated anti-slip band to prevent it from riding up.

If you like pockets you are in for a treat with the Kelvin. On the outside there are two large waterproof side pockets that are fleece-lined for extra warmth. On the chest there is a small pocket that houses a retractable ID holder, and on the left sleeve there is the obligatory lift pass pocket. Inside there is a media pocket with a headphone loop, a mobile phone holder, a mesh pocket you can stuff goggles into and another see-through pocket for ID. Don’t be baffled by a large zip on the left of the jacket just above the main zip – this leads through to the jacket’s lining, and is so clubs can sew their logo on to the jacket if they like. It’s quite discreet though, so you shouldn’t confuse it with a pocket.

This is a warm jacket packed with features, but it’s on the heavy side. It’ll be fine for winter sports, but even better for general winter use back home.

Result R069M Kelvin Jacket Verdict

A good, value for money winter jacket.
