We’ve been using Snugpak products for years. The company makes great sleeping bags and insulated jackets, and the fact that it still manufactures some kit in the UK makes us like them even more.

The Chrysalis 3 uses Snugpak’s Softie synthetic fill to keep you warm, and the same insulation is used by the British military in the Snugpak sleeping bags that they use. The bag isn’t the lightest, at 1.69kg, nor is it the most packable in this test, but you should be able to fit it into most expedition rucksacks at squeeze. But despite its large pack size, there isn’t that much room inside the bag – I found it difficult to do the zip up, even when I used the second zip that’s there to make it a bit bigger. I am tall and very broad though, so this won’t be a problem for everyone.

The bag comes with an LED torch that attaches to the hood (a genius idea) and it can be cinched in at the top to keep draughts out.

Snugpak Chrysalis 3 Verdict

The temperature ratings will suit a wide variety of three-season adventures and even some winter excursions. Just be warned about the size if you’re a bigger person.
