Watch: Surfing the world’s tallest waves

The huge, record-breaking waves of Nazaré, Portugal, are well known among surfers. An underwater canyon converges the full power of the ocean and, when combined with local currents, can form freak wave over 30m high.

That’s bigger than six double decker buses.

For the bravest big-wave surfers in the world, these giant swells are the holy grail. Catch the right one (and stay on your feet) and you’ll find yourself in the record books. But, make a mistake and you’ll find yourself in big trouble.

Check out this incredible footage of some of the biggest names in surf taking on (and wiping out) while riding the formidable waves at Nazaré.
