Gran Canaria Walking Festival 2025 – your next island hiking adventure
We’ve written about how the island of Gran Canaria is a hiker’s paradise before, and now, you can discover it for yourself with the Gran Canaria Walking Festival 2025.
This festival is a celebration of everything that’s great about hiking: exploring pristine nature, the relaxation of the trail, gaining a greater appreciation for local culture, and meeting friendly, like-minded people.
Running from 23-26 October, the Gran Canaria Walking Festival features expertly crafted hiking routes that put the island’s special beauty front and centre, but also combine gastronomy and cultural insights to create the ideal walking break.
With the weather turning colder and wetter here in the UK (rain is lashing against my window as I type this, so spending a few days hiking on a warm, sun-drenched island sounds pretty damn appealing), it’s the perfect time to escape for a few days and enjoy good hiking, good food, and good weather.
This is what you can expect from the Gran Canaria Walking Festival 2025.
Expertly crafted and guided hiking routes

At its core, the festival is about hiking. That’s why the organisers have designed four unique routes that each offer something special, combining great walking with culture and food.
For example, Route 1 is a hike to the traditional Canarian village of Artenera through the historic Tamadaba Pine Forest, one of the oldest and best-preserved natural areas of Gran Canaria. Meandering through the towering, centuries-old trees and past volcanic rock formations, the trail will take you across the Tejeda massif with views of the splendid Mount Teide on the horizon.
The hike finishes at the charming rustic village of Artenera, surrounded by terraced fields, caves, and cliffs, where you can relax and enjoy the traditional crafts and architecture of the village.
Or, you could join the ‘Teror and its rural secrets‘ route, which combines the rich cultural heritage of Gran Canaria with natural wonders. Highlights include the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino, a centuries-old basilica that attracts pilgrims from around the world, the Barranco del Álamo with its cane plantation, laural forest, and mountain streams, and the Lomo del Espartero, with its panoramic views and agricultural traditions.
Along this route, you’ll discuss the role of faith in Canarian life, the development of agricultural techniques, and the patterns of human settlement on the island, providing a rewarding deep-dive into the culture of Gran Canaria.
Each of these routes is guided by experts who will share their knowledge of the island, from the special flora to the unique traditions. It’s much more than just a hike.
Great food and stress-free itineraries

Included on each route is a picnic and snacks which highlight the flavours of Gran Canaria, along with the chance to taste local produce and buy some to take home with you. Along with the food and the guide, transport is included from the start and end points of each route along with insurance, so you can embark on each hike completely stress-free. All you need to bring is your hiking shoes and water bottle.
Each of the four routes takes place on a different day between 23-26 October, so you can stay and discover all four if you choose, or come for the weekend and do a couple. Whichever you choose, you’re guaranteed stunning scenery, excellent walking, and an appreciation for the Canarian way of life.
