Watch: The first free ascent of The Dawn Wall

first free ascent of The Dawn Wall

In January 2015, Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson made the first free ascent of The Dawn Wall on Yosemite’s legendary El Capitan (2,308m).

‘Free ascent’ (or ‘free climbing’) is when climbers only use equipment (ropes, etc.) to protect themselves from injury. They cannot use equipment to assist with their progress.

Below, watch incredible footage of Tommy climbing Pitch 15 (rated 5.14c). Here, four unique camera angles reveal almost 400m of exposure under the climber’s perilous foot placements on some seriously miniscule holds.
