The Caribbean island of Saint Lucia might be best known as a package holiday destination, but away from the gleaming sands and plush comforts of the resorts is a world of adventure just waiting to be explored.

Yes, there are those marvellous white-sand beaches, but step into the interior, and you’ll be treated to lush rainforest treks, mountain trails, wildlife encounters, and pulse-raising ziplines.

A hiking paradise

Although a relatively small landmass (27 miles long and 14 miles wide), Saint Lucia is packed with hiking opportunities for every ability.

The most famous hike on the island involves summiting the iconic Pitons, the two volcanic plugs that loom over the colourful town of Soufrière. Although the taller of the two at 798m, Gros Piton presents a slightly easier outing although is still a formidable ascent, while Petit Piton rises to 743m and features a challenging, steep trail with roped scrambling sections and often thick foliage to find your way through.

Your efforts are rewarded with panoramic views over the island, from the opposing spire of Gros Piton to the shimmering waters of the Caribbean. As the Pitons are a UNESCO World Heritage site, guides are required to help protect the area, but they’re easy to arrange either by pre-booking a tour or at the base of the hike.

Keen hikers can combine the two Pitons with an ascent of Saint Lucia’s highest peak, Mount Gimie (950m) to complete the local Three Peaks Challenge.

If you’re after a more relaxing hiking experience, you can opt for the Tet Paul Nature Trail around the base of the Pitons, or hike around Pigeon Island, where you can discover old forts and views across to Martinique.

Discover unique wildlife

Saint Lucia is a haven for wildlife, with a wide range of endemic species including birds, reptiles, and plants. To promote its unique animals, the island has developed its own spin on Africa’s Big Five safari: the Small Six. This safari encourages people to explore the rainforests of Saint Lucia in search of six small yet spectacular creatures, all of which are endangered but also the focus for successful conservation efforts.

Scan the trees for the bright flashes of colour of the Saint Lucia Parrot or the yellow and black plumage of the Saint Lucia Oriole, and see if you can spot the iridescent blue of the Saint Lucia Whiptail lizard or the smallest known snake in the world, the Saint Lucia Worm Snake, in the undergrowth.

You can also take to the water, diving and snorkelling to get up close with brightly coloured coral and sponges, fascinating and peculiar fish, and even turtles, which lay their eggs on the beaches of the island. If you’re lucky, you might even see them hatch as you stroll along Anse Chastanet Beach in September or October.

Adrenaline and relaxation

If you’re after a thrilling experience, you can spend an afternoon flying through the rainforest canopy on one of the island’s three zipline courses, explore the beaches or trails by bicycle, ATV, or horse, and try kitesurfing or kayaking on one of Saint Lucia’s many bays.

You can also enjoy more relaxed experiences, such as open-air aerial tramway that glides serenely through the rainforest, or visit the vibrant markets and street scenes of the capital Castries or the buzzing town of Gros Islet.

The national dish is green figs (green bananas) and saltfish, and there’s deliciously spiced and flavoured stews, curries, and soups to try.
