Mac in a Sac Summit: best budget packable down jacket for outdoor adventures?
Everyone knows about Mac in a Sac waterproofs, but were you aware that the company behind them also create a range of kit that’ll help look after you on your next adventure?
The Venture Series is all about high-performance, packable clothing which offers comfort, flexibility, and style. The latest addition to its line-up is the Summit, a down-filled, water-resistant jacket that’s designed to keep you warm through the colder months of winter and beyond.
We’ve been using the Summit jacket for a year now, through winter walks and cool nights by the campfire in summer, and not only have we been impressed with its performance, we reckon it’s damn good value, too.
This is what you need to know about the Mac in a Sac Summit jacket.
Summit jacket features: a versatile and affordable down jacket

Weighing in at less than 500g, the lightweight and packable jacket is constructed from ripstop nylon that’s water repellent up to 1,000mm. That means that the Summit is more than capable of keeping you dry in light showers, although it will struggle when the rain’s really coming down, so pairing it with a waterproof is necessary in wet weather.
The water-repellency is just a bonus though – it’s best at keeping you warm, thanks to the 90% duck down and 10% feather insulation with a 600 Fill Power rating.
Fill Power is a measure of how well the down will expand after being compressed, giving you a sense of the quality of the down, and a garment or sleeping bag’s compressibility and insulating properties. A rating of 600 FP means that an ounce of down can cover 600 cubic inches at maximum loft. This isn’t the highest rating (900 is about as good as it gets), but it is about as much as you need for all but the coldest of climates.
The fit of the Summit jacket is also very good, a slim fit that offers excellent movement and flexibility without being constrictive, and slim enough to be able to wear a waterproof over the top.
There are also reflective details to help you be better seen when you’re out in the wild (or walking beside a road on a winter’s night), in addition to a down-filled hood, a fleece-lined chin guard, and storm cuffs to keep the weather at bay. The Summit also has a quality YKK Vislon zip for sealing it up and a pair of generously-sized waist pockets to stash your essentials.
There’s a range of colours: Ocean Blue, Flame, and Jet Black in men’s sizes, and Pink, Mint, and Jet Black in women’s.
For £114.99, the Mac in a Sac Summit represents great value, especially when compared to similarly-specced jackets from other brands which carry much higher price tags.
